So we are nearly 4 years into the current generation of gaming with Sony‘s PlayStation 4 and Microsoft‘s Xbox One. The Xbox One has massively fallen behind PlayStation 4 this generation, But why? Of course, it all goes back to the memorable day (not for good reasons) back in may of 2013 when Don Mattrick stunned the gaming community with a surprisingly non-gaming focused games console reveal that focused on TV, Kinect and Sports and of course Sony came out afterwards and just destroyed Microsoft with their PlayStation 4 reveal and talked about games.
FastFoward to June 2017 (the month and year this is being written in) and Sony‘s PlayStation 4 is currently leading with 60 million sales where Microsoft‘s Xbox One is currently falling short at approximately just 28 million units. So, why has Sony sold almost double the amount of Playstation 4 units? Games. Just this year Sony has already released exclusives such as Nier, Nioh, Persona 5 and Horizon Zero Dawn with the Crash Bandicoot Remaster (which I am so excited for!) coming out at the end of June and with the Uncharted 4 spin-off Uncharted the Lost Legacy out in August. What has Microsoft had out this year that’s been big? Halo Wars 2, Just Halo Wars 2. So does Microsoft also need to release 4 exclusives in the 1st 6 months of the year? No, But I’m sure they can at least put out 2, No?
Another point to this is Microsoft bringing all future exclusives (From September 2016 onwards) to the PC, I still to this day don’t understand why Microsoft chose to do this and essentially kill the need for an Xbox One, I have seen such a large number of gamers saying that they only had an Xbox One for the console’s exclusives, So that gets rid of those Xbox One consoles and essentially kills the market for needing one if you have a good enough gaming PC.
So let’s talk a little bit about E3 this year. Microsoft recently revealed their brand new $500 Xbox One X that has 6 Teraflops and does true 4K gaming, Great. But look at the games coming out such as Cuphead, Sea Of Thieves, Forza Motorsport 7 and Crackdown 3. $500 is a lot to ask for the very few Xbox One exclusives that will really take advantage of this especially when these will work on your original launch day Xbox One or Xbox One S, I only feel like 2 of these games in Forza And Crackdown are going to look noticeably different with the big 4K Xbox One X with the other 2 being stylised and just aren’t going to really take advantage of the 4K gaming machine that is the Xbox One X. I almost feel like if the Xbox One X had been a PlayStation it would be more worth it with PlayStation‘s upcoming exclusives such as Detroit, Spider-Man, God Of War, Death Stranding, Day’s Gone and Uncharted The Lost Legacy.
So my closing point is that Microsoft needs a fresh lineup of new IP and games that will really take advantage of the Xbox One X, I got my Xbox One at launch for more than £300 and have just never felt like it was really pushed in terms of generation-defining exclusives other than perhaps Ryse Son Of Rome And Inside. Gamers have realised all of this and the sales numbers just prove it (at least gamers that are not hardcore Xbox fans). Both consoles do have their pros and cons but PlayStation is just doing so much better. As always you can get in touch using the information below.
