The Rebirth Of Spider-Man

By Matthew Nemeth

Today I am here to talk about the rebirth of a character that means a lot to me, Spider-Man. In 2017 and 2018 the character was, you could say, given a rebirth of sorts. From the Spider-Man Homecoming 2017 MCU Reboot with Tom Holland to the 2018 animated new Spider-Verse film. With so many average to bad films and video games in the past, it’s so nice to see the character be given new life.

The 1st glimmer of hope was of course when the deal with Sony and Marvel was struck and Tom Holland was eventually cast and to having the 1st somewhat mysterious sighting at the end of that Civil War trailer simply saying “hey everyone”, at that moment I still knew very little about Tom Holland and hearing the mysterious voice of his (to me at the time) put a smile on my face. Spider-Man was back and nicely put into the very successful MCU, I had hope again for the character after the awful Amazing Spider-Man films and video games.

Seeing the character get his own film in Homecoming was really something nice and showed the character was being put back into the spotlight, sure, IronMan, Thor and Cap where great. But this was my Spider-Man coming back. It was also nice to see that Sony and Marvel had looked at Spider-Man himself and almost remembered how mainstream he is, I was really happy not only to have Spider-Man come back, but be done right.

Moving to April 2018 and Avengers Infinity War comes out, this was the 1st time I had ever seen the character with the Avengers in this way and be given his own special suit that, yes, gave him new tools which I was sceptical of, but I also felt like those tools made sense and actually fit with the character in a nice way. So from the Civil War tease in the trailer, to his solo film, to the Avengers, this was the correct way to bring the character back and I loved it. Spider-Man came back.

Move slightly forward to September 2018 and Marvel’s Spider-Man PlayStation 4 exclusive video game arrives. New fresh story, a new take on the character, and most importantly for a video game, a damn good video game. This is a massive deal for Insomniac, Sony, PlayStation and Marvel. So how did it turn out? Spider-Man for PlayStation 4 was the best selling PlayStation 4 exclusive ever, and nominated for Game Of The Year in 2018.

Move forward slightly again to December 2018 and Spider-Man Into The Spider-Verse is released, an excellent animated Comic Book style film that focuses more on Miles Morales but includes several other characters including Peter Parker/Spider-Man and Gwen Stacey/Spider-Gwen.

The character is where he needs and deserves to be with successful video games, films and in the animated style too. This article is a celebration of the characters return and to talk about what the return meant to me.

Thank you to Marvel, Sony, Insomniac, Steve Ditko and PlayStation.

And of course, the biggest thank you to Stan Lee. Without Stan Lee, none of this would have happened. R.I.P.
